Aakash Chopra: On Tuesday, 19 August 2025, the BCCI announced the Asia Cup 2025 squad, which did not include Shreyas Iyer’s name. The Asia Cup will be played in the UAE from 9 September to 28 September, where chief selector Ajit Agarkar and India’s T20 team captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed the names of the 15 selected players in front of the media. At the same time, former India player Aakash Chopra has raised questions after not seeing Shreyas’ name included.

Chopra said that Iyer could not have done much more to make a place in the team, and if he continues to perform well in ODIs and domestic cricket, he is likely to be selected for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Aakash further said, “This is the Asia Cup team. Don’t connect it to the World Cup, because after that there are 15 T20 matches. The world changes in 15 T20 matches. If he keeps scoring runs in ODIs, sooner or later Shreyas Iyer will definitely be part of the T20 team. I am sure Shreyas Iyer will definitely be part of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 team.
Iyer’s name is not even among the reserve players
Akash Chopra said in surprise, “Shreyas’ name is not even among the five reserve players. It is understandable that you cannot keep him in 15, but you wanted lower order batsmen as backup. However, at least a place could have been made for him in the reserve players, where the selectors have kept Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna. This player’s name could have been there, doesn’t he deserve this place too?”
