BCCI invites applications for new lead sponsor, online gaming, betting companies banned from bidding

The BCCI confirmed this through a release on Tuesday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has extended an open invitation to bidders interested in acquiring the main sponsorship rights of its national teams. This comes after the recent ban on Dream11. The successful bidder will be eligible to become the lead sponsor of both India’s men’s and women’s teams for a fixed period. The time limit of which has not yet been determined by the BCCI.

However, the BCCI has set stringent checks and criteria for interested bidders. Brands associated with the same industry as the current sponsor will not be eligible to bid. In addition, any betting brands, online gaming providers, liquor companies, tobacco companies, pornography companies and cryptocurrency companies are banned from bidding.

According to a release on the BCCI’s official website on Tuesday, September 2, each bidder must be a ‘fit and proper person’. In determining whether an individual is a fit and proper person, BCCI may take into account any factor as BCCI may deem fit, including without limitation any one or more of the following criteria:

1. Not convicted by a court of law for any criminal offence or offences involving moral turpitude, economic offences or fraud;

2. Not having any conflict of interest as per BCCI’s Conflict of Interest Regulations.

3. Lack of conviction for any offence punishable with imprisonment for 2 (two) years or more in any jurisdiction.

4. Lack of classification as a wilful defaulter by the Reserve Bank of India.

5. An honest and respectable person; and BCCI reserves the right to reject any bid from any bidder who in BCCI’s opinion and at its sole discretion does not fulfil these criteria.

The following list of brand categories is not permitted under the Invitation for Expression of Interest (IEOI) prohibited brand categories:

1. Alcohol products

2. Betting or gambling services

3. Cryptocurrencies

4. Online money gaming or any such activity prohibited under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025

5. Tobacco

6. Any content likely to offend public morality, such as, but not limited to, pornography.
