"This courage came from my upbringing" - Washington Sundar recalls father's message that helped him during IPL debut

India and Gujarat Titans (GT) all-rounder Washington Sundar recalled a message from his father that helped him during his IPL debut. He began his journey in the league with the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017.

Interestingly, Washington Sundar was not picked by them at the auction but joined the team later on as a replacement player for Ravichandran Ashwin. He revealed that his father had taught him to be courageous right from his childhood, which helped him in the future and even during his IPL debut.

"I went as a replacement. I joined the team after 3-4 games. Then, they let me play immediately. That was a great opportunity and blessing. But, this courage I would say, came from my upbringing. That's one thing I have always been asked to do, right from very young. Whatever I do, I have to do it with courage. My father has always brought me up in a way that I should be tough no matter what," he said in an episode on 'Cheeky Cheeka'.

The all-rounder also narrated the backstory of how he was called up by the team's assistant coach after his impressive performances in the domestic season before the 2017 IPL.

"That year, before IPL, we won Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy. I bowled well in those two tournaments. And our coach was Rishikesh Kanedkar. He was RPSG's assistant coach. So, as soon as the tournament was over, I used to be at home. Suddenly, one day, he called me. I think it was Ashwin (who was injured). He said they're looking for a replacement. You come here. He called me and another person. I bowled for two days. They were happy. After that, I was with the team. Obviously, after two or three matches, I joined the team's squad. It was a great story. Everything went well. And for me, I was able to play cricket and learn a lot," he added.

Washington Sundar made his IPL debut under the leadership of Steve Smith and the presence of legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni in the team. They made the final that season but lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI) by one run.

Washington Sundar opens up on faith shown in him by MS Dhoni and Steve Smith

Washington Sundar opened up on the faith MS Dhoni and Steve Smith showed in him during his debut IPL season. He played 11 matches that year and picked up eight wickets at an average of 23.12 and an economy rate of 6.16.

"He used to say, if you do this you'll I'll see success. That was literally the case. (MS) That was the case the whole season. Smith also had a lot of confidence in me. He gave me a lot of bowling in powerplay. The way he looked at me, I liked it a lot. He genuinely believed in me," he said. (via the aforementioned source)

Overall, Washington Sundar has played 66 IPL matches so far. He has picked up 39 wickets at an average of 36.82 and an economy rate of 7.69. With the bat, he has scored 511 runs.

Apart from Rising Pune Supergiant, he has played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), and is currently with GT.

Ranking Virat Kohli's top 5 Test hundreds in Australia

Veteran Team India batter Virat Kohli enjoyed his Test battles against Australia. The right-hander played a total of 30 Test matches against the Aussies and scored 2,232 runs at an average of 43.76. Kohli hit a total of nine hundreds and five half-centuries in Test matches against Australia.

Looking specifically at his Test record against Australia in Australia, he played 18 matches Down Under and scored 1,542 runs at an average of 46.72. The former India captain notched up seven hundreds and four half-centuries in Australia. He scored 300 runs in four matches during his maiden Test tour Down Under in 2011-12. His stats included one hundred and one half-century.

Kohli's last Test tour of Australia was in 2024-25. He scored an unbeaten 100 in the opening Test in Perth, but struggled thereafter. In nine innings across five games, he totaled 190 runs at an average of 23.75. He announced his retirement from Tests ahead of the 2025 tour of England. In this feature, we rank Kohli's top five Test hundreds in Australia.

#5 (116) Adelaide, 2012

Kohli's maiden Test hundred came during the 2011-12 tour of Australia. He scored 116 off 213 balls in the first innings in Adelaide as India responded to Australia's huge total of 604-7 declared. Walking into bat at No. 6, with India in big trouble at 87-4, he gave a glimpse of the future with a defiant ton under pressure.

Occupying the crease for 237 minutes, the batter hit 11 fours and a six before being trapped lbw by Ben Hilfenhaus. Showing maturity, he added 114 for the sixth wicket with keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha (35). Despite Kohli's resistance, India were bowled out for 272 and ended up losing the Test by 298 runs.

#4 (123) Perth, 2018

Kohli scored a sublime 123 off 257 balls against Australia in second Test of the four-match series in 2018-19. Australia batted first in this match and posted 326. India had a great opportunity to build a big total, but were bowled out for 283. Kohli led from front, hitting 13 fours and a six, but did not get much support from others.

India lost their openers with only eight runs on the board after which Kohli added 74 with Cheteshwar Pujara (24), 91 with Ajinkya Rahane (51) and 50 with Hanuma Vihari (20). The Indian skipper's fine knock ended when he was caught at second slip off Pat Cummins' bowling. The visitors went on to lose the Test by 146 runs.

#3 (169) Melbourne, 2014

Kohli scored a brilliant 169 in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne during the 2014-15 tour. The Aussies had batted first in the contest and has posted a big total of 530. India, already 2-0 down in the four-match series, were under a huge amount of pressure. Kohli, however, rose to the occasion.

The right-hander scored a resolute 169 off 272 balls, hitting 18 fours in his 380-minute stay at the crease. Kohli featured in an impressive 262-run stand with Rahane (147). His terrific knock ended when he was caught behind off Mitchell Johnson. Kohli also scored 54 in the second innings as the Test ended in a draw.

#2 (147) Sydney, 2015Virat Kohli celebrates his hundred in the 2015 Sydney Test.

Kohli's century in Sydney in the New Year Test of 2015 ranks above his hundred in Melbourne in the preceding Test for two reasons. One - MS Dhoni had announced his shock retired from Test cricket after the MCG game and two - he had to lift India all over again after their bowlers had again conceded a huge score. To pull it off for the second game in a row, while leading the side, was pure genius.

Batting first, Australia had put up 572-7 declared at the SCG. Responding to the total, India lost Murali Vijay for a duck. Kohli, however, anchored the innings like a true leader. He added 141 for the third wicket with KL Rahul (110) and held one end up even as a few quick wickets fell at the other end.

The Indian skipper ended up scoring 147 off 230 balls, hitting 20 fours during his 315-minute stay at the crease. The visitors ended up posting 475 in their first innings. Kohli also contributed 46 in the second innings as India drew the Test.

#1 (141) Adelaide, 2014

Leading India in Adelaide in the first Test of the 2014-15 tour of Australia, Kohli made a commanding statement.

"He isn’t here, but he has put this habit" - Ajay Jadeja credits Indian legend for Abhishek Sharma’s fearless batting approach in Asia Cup 2025

Former India batter Ajay Jadeja has lauded the influence of batting talisman Rohit Sharma for the team's current aggresive approach. The 54-year-old said that the present ODI captain originated the idea of taking on the bowling, which has seeped into the other batters in India's current playing XI.

The 38-year-old retired from T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to a World Cup triumph in the West Indies and USA. Jadeja said on Sony Sports:

“He (Abhishek Sharma) is a dominating player. What I will add is that the entire team have played a role in his success because to accept that we will play in this manner, Rohit Sharma originated this. He isn’t here, but he has put this habit.”

“Otherwise, the way he got out, two years ago, six years ago, or even 10 years ago, he may have been questioned for scoring 30 runs and getting out. The point is that only if he looks to hit can he get out. The confidence that he is getting, the team appreciating him for his style of play and the eighth batter in the team is allowing him to bat in this manner”.

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said that opening batter Abhishek Sharma was always looking to play matches in any part of India, when he is not involved with the national team. The current Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) assistant coach said that Sharma not only had the talent, but also had the diligence to go with it.

"He goes everywhere to play matches. When he is not playing for India, whether it is in Delhi or Dehradun or Rajasthan, or Mumbai, wherever there is cricket happening, wherever there is a ground, wherever he can get a chance, Abhishek Sharma goes there to practice. He’s not got the talent, but he is also diligent. The mindset to become a cricketer is most important to him," Nayar said.

Abhishek Nayar gives insight into Abhishek Sharma's evolution as a batter

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar gave a glimpse into how Abhishek Sharma became the batter that he is today. Nayar revealed how the 25-year-old spoke to him about practicing on big boundaries and crucially, working on his skill to hit sixes.

“I look at this in two ways. Firstly, a batter is given the option to play a certain way. But why is the batter given that option? Because you have the talent. A lot of players come, many of them try to play in this manner, but they don’t get that long rope. That’s because when you see them play, you don’t feel that he has it in him. But Abhishek Sharma is not one of them.”

“The way he began in the IPL, not sure if you remember, the first three years were a struggle for him. I’ll say this on air when we were playing in the UAE against SRH, it did not seem then that he would be able to hit sixes. He was playing run-a-ball. He did not have that ability. He could play, but he did not have that ability," he said.

Nayar also revealed an anectode from the DY Patil T20 tournament where he saw Abhishek Sharma hit Varun Chakaravarthy for three sixes. He further said that the southpaw expressed confidence to be able to hit any bowler, on any given length. Nayar said:

“When I was with the team and I discussed with him as to what he did differently, he said that he practiced on grounds that had big boundaries, and for hours, he practiced only hitting sixes. The more I practiced the routine, I found a flow to my batting. I found the confidence that whichever ball I needed to hit, I would be able to do that.”

“The first glimpse of that I saw came in the DY Patil tournament. Varun Chakaravarthy was a well-known bowler back then. Abhishek was among the runs, but not a lot. He hit him for three sixes in an over. They lost that match, but when he hit those sixes on the rise, I spoke to him after the match. He said, “Bhaiyya, ab toh main nikal pada hoon”. I know I’ll make runs now because I have worked so hard, and I have the confidence I can hit whatever the length, wherever I want. He still hasn’t let go of that mindset. ”

A few days ago, former India opener Aakash Chopra wondered if Abhishek Sharma was, at present, the best T20 opening batter in the world. Chopra spoke about the southpaw's ability to step down the track and hit the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi for a six off the first ball of an innings, adding that he had been a revelation since he moved to the top

Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to get two new members, prominent names finalised

The two new selectors are to come in place of Subroto Banerjee (Central) and S Sharath (South).

As the BCCI called for applicants for the positions of two national selectors in August, two prominent names of Indian cricket have come to the light. Ex-cricketers Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh are in contention, as per a report in the Indian Express. The report further said that the BCCI did not get a great response from ex-India players.

New Selectors by October

The others in contention were, Praveen Kumar, ex-UP pacer Ashish Zaidi, and Himachal’s Shakti Singh. Meanwhile, RP and Ojha could come in place of Subroto Banerjee (Central) and S Sharath (South). As far as the eligibility criteria is concerned, the applicant should have played a minimum of 7 Tests, or 30 FC matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 FC matches.

RP Singh & Pragyan Ojha in Contention

In addition to that, he should have retired from cricket at least five years before, and should not have been a serving member of any of the committee’s for more than five years. That was Ojha and RP fit the bill well. RP Singh played 14 Test, 58 ODIs and 10 T20Is for Team India.

On the other hand, Ojha played 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and 6 T20Is for the team. The CAC will be making the decision following an interview. Post that recommendations will be made and the BCCI office-bearers will approve. The two incoming selectors are likely to take charge in October.

Earlier in August, as per a report in Indian Express, Ajit Agarkar got an extension of a year, and will now stay at the helm until July 2026. He had taken over the charge back in July 2023.

CK4444: The Rise of a Distinctive Fashion Brand from Bangladesh

Bangladesh, often associated with its massive garment industry, has long been a global powerhouse in clothing manufacturing. But in recent years, the country has started to shift gears — from just producing garments for international labels to creating and nurturing homegrown fashion brands with unique identities. One name that’s beginning to gain traction in this space is CK4444, a brand that blends contemporary streetwear aesthetics with Bangladeshi cultural undertones.

CK4444 isn’t just another fashion brand. It’s a movement, a statement, and a vision that speaks to the youth of Bangladesh while resonating with a global audience seeking authenticity, creativity, and cultural flair.

The Story Behind CK4444

Founded in the early 2020s, CK4444 was born from a desire to challenge the conventional Bangladeshi fashion scene, which had long been dominated by traditional or formal wear. Its founder — whose identity is as enigmatic as the brand’s cryptic name — wanted to build a fashion house that reflected the gritty realism of urban life, the vibrancy of youth culture, and the raw energy of self-expression.

The name CK4444 itself is intriguing. While many speculate that “CK” could stand for the initials of the founder or represent a clever play on global fashion names, and “4444” might symbolize spiritual balance or repeating numerology, the brand has never officially confirmed the meaning. This ambiguity adds to its appeal, allowing wearers to define the brand through their own lens.

Brand Philosophy: Street, Soul, and Substance

CK4444 isn’t about flashy logos or seasonal trends. It’s about storytelling through style. The brand is heavily inspired by urban Bangladeshi subculturesgraffitimusichip-hopskate culture, and the daily hustle of Dhaka’s streets.

Their mission is simple yet powerful:

“To empower individuality, embrace cultural fusion, and inspire fearless self-expression through fashion.”

This philosophy resonates with a generation of young Bangladeshis who are navigating identity in an increasingly globalized world. CK4444 gives them a wardrobe that speaks their language — bold, real, and unapologetic.

Design Language and Product Line

CK4444’s design language is defined by:

  • Bold graphics and typographic prints
  • Monochrome palettes with sudden splashes of neon or symbolic red
  • Oversized silhouettesboxy cuts, and gender-neutral shapes
  • Locally inspired iconography (like Bengali script, rickshaw art motifs, and political posters)

Product Categories:

  1. Streetwear Essentials — Hoodies, joggers, cargo pants, denim jackets
  2. Graphic Tees — Featuring local slang, street signs, or protest art
  3. Caps & Accessories — Bucket hats, canvas bags, rings, and chains
  4. Limited Drops — Exclusive collections inspired by political events, social movements, or local artists

Each drop is typically limited in quantity, fueling exclusivity and demand.

Sustainability and Local Impact

While fashion often comes under scrutiny for its environmental footprint, CK4444 is making conscious efforts to adopt sustainable practices. They collaborate with local fabric suppliers, work with artisan printers, and promote slow fashion by avoiding overproduction.

Moreover, the brand actively hires from within underrepresented communities and funds youth creative initiatives in Dhaka. In doing so, it doesn’t just sell clothes — it builds a culture and community.

Social Media Strategy & Cultural Relevance

CK4444 has a strong digital presence. Their Instagram feed is a mix of high-contrast editorial shoots, raw urban photography, and user-generated content. They rely heavily on micro-influencerslocal musicians, and underground models who embody the spirit of the brand rather than mainstream beauty standards.

They also host pop-up eventsgraffiti art installations, and collaborations with local rappers, making them a regular name in Dhaka’s underground scene. This blend of fashion, music, and activism gives CK4444 its cultural edge.

Challenges in the Local Market

Despite its rising popularity, CK4444 faces significant challenges:

  • Price sensitivity in the Bangladeshi market
  • Navigating conservative attitudes toward streetwear
  • Lack of local infrastructure for high-quality, small-batch production
  • Piracy and copycat brands

However, these challenges have only pushed the brand to innovate, double down on quality, and focus more on brand loyalty and experiential marketing.

Global Aspirations

CK4444’s vision extends far beyond Bangladesh. They aim to become a South Asian streetwear powerhouse, appealing to the diaspora in the UK, US, and Middle East. Their message of cultural pride and rebellious creativity aligns well with global trends favoring authentic, diverse, and purpose-driven fashion.

With increasing online orders from international customers and growing visibility on platforms like TikTok, CK4444 is already making inroads beyond borders.

More Than Just a Brand

In a world saturated with fast fashion and soulless labels, CK4444 stands out not just because of its aesthetic, but because of its ideology. It’s fashion with a cause, style with a soul, and a voice for a generation that’s bold, aware, and deeply connected to both local roots and global currents.

For Bangladesh, CK4444 is more than just a brand — it’s a sign that the country’s creative youth are ready to take center stage, not just as workers behind the scenes, but as leaders, designers, and cultural icons shaping the future of global fashion.
