IPL 2026: MS Dhoni will leave captaincy, will play as wicketkeeper batsman

Former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni confirmed that he will not captain CSK in 2026, but will play as a specialist keeper-batsman in the team. 2026 will see the return of team captain Rituraj Gaikwad, who was ruled out due to a shoulder fracture during the ongoing tournament in 2025.

The year 2025 was nothing less than a nightmare for CSK, where the team finished last on the points table. Dhoni recently told openly in a private program that “The team was in dire need of improving its batting order and now a lot of work has been done on it. If Rituraj also takes over the captaincy of the team, then the team will perform even better, along with this we will try to improve the remaining shortcomings in the upcoming auction.”
Gaikwad last played against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur in 2025, after which he was also selected for England’s Yorkshire team, but he withdrew his name due to personal reasons. Now Gaikwad is all set to play for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Dhoni said, “There are ups and downs for every team, but it is important to learn from them and move forward. We now know where the mistakes have been made, and we are trying our best to correct them.”
44-year-old Dhoni admitted that CSK has not been performing well for the last two seasons, but in 2026 it will try its best to perform as well as before because now the team has understood its mistakes. He thanked his fans and promised that now the CSK team will soon return to the top.
