A heroic all-round effort from Mohammed Nabi was not enough as Afghanistan were knocked out of the Asia Cup 2025 group stage on Thursday. The result meant Sri Lanka and Bangladesh joined India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super 4 stage.
Afghanistan knocked out, IND vs PAK sequel – Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 revealed
India were the first team to qualify for the Super 4 stage thanks to their wins over UAE and Pakistan. The Men in Blue have a healthy run rate and should finish as the top team in Group A. Pakistan’s chances were in a bother following a defeat to India, but they managed to scrape through with a win over UAE in their final group game. The two arch-rivals have dominated off-field interest during the Asia Cup. They will once again square off in Dubai on Sunday, September 21.
The equation for Afghanistan on Thursday was simple. Win and qualify. That Rashid Khan’s side fell short of and Bangladesh qualified instead. The Litton Das led side had snatched victory over the Afghans and their win over Hong Kong helped them make it to the next round. Sri Lanka won all three games rather comfortably and finished a top Group B.
The four teams – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, will now face off against each other once in the Super 4 stage. The top 2 in the points table will then contest in the Asia Cup 2025 final. Should the results align, India vs Pakistan could again be on the cards if the two teams finish on top.
