Madhya Pradesh police have arrested 28-year-old Aqeel Khan, a resident of Azad Nagar, for allegedly molesting two Australian women cricketers in Indore, who were staying at a prestigious hotel for the eight-team global event.

Women’s World Cup 2025: According to police officials, “The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Thursday morning when the two players were walking to a cafe about half a kilometer from the hotel.”

Women’s World Cup 2025: The players issued an emergency call – they contacted their team security officer, Danny Simmons, who coordinated with local security liaison officers and dispatched a vehicle for assistance. The Australian team’s security manager also filed a complaint at the MIG police station.

Upon receiving information, senior police officers met both cricketers, recorded their statements, and registered an FIR at the MIG police station under sections 74 (use of criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman) and 78 (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Adequate security measures were not taken around the hotel: Police

Police said, “The suspect’s motorcycle exactly matched the description and number plate given by eyewitnesses.” Nevertheless, the quick arrest conceals deeper systemic flaws. Police insiders have admitted to “intelligence lapses” in the operation.

They said on Saturday that, given the major sporting event and the security of the women cricketers, “adequate security measures were not taken around the hotel.”

Meanwhile, Australia maintained their unbeaten run in the Women’s World Cup 2025, defeating South Africa by seven wickets at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday.
