Indian batsmen: India’s first innings ended at 471 runs on the second day of the first Test being played between India and England in Leeds. On Saturday, India started the game with a score of 359/3, but the visiting team could not live up to expectations. On the second day, India lost its remaining seven wickets for just 112 runs. The fall of four wickets in the first session gave England a chance to come back. England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Josh Tongue bowled brilliantly and took four wickets each, due to which India could not touch the 500-run mark.

Historic feat of three centuries

Captain Shubman Gill (147), wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant (134) and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) scored centuries for India. This is the feat of Indian batsmen scoring three centuries in a Test innings outside Asia after 19 years. Earlier in 2006, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Kaif had achieved this feat against West Indies at Gros Islet. Gill and Pant made a brilliant partnership of 209 runs for the fourth wicket, which put India in a strong position.

Pant’s record and lifeline

Rishabh Pant started the game with 65 runs in the morning and batted brilliantly while keeping the strike with himself. He got a lifeline at 124 runs, when Jamie Smith missed a stumping opportunity on the ball of off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. Pant first scored 94 runs by hitting a six and then completed 99 runs by playing cautiously. India’s batting faltered in the final session, giving England a chance to come back.
